Initial
preparation for the Manx involved purchase of a CBR600RR a fine machine if a tad
cramped with my 15 stone 6'2" frame. I ran it once on a very bumpy road race
in the Isle of Man and was initially very happy with it. The start of Practice
week was totally indifferent on the weather front, a mixture of wind and damp
around the course made tyre choice a pain but the first practice went well with
a 105mph lap straight off which meant I had qualified for both the Junior and
Senior races.
Started
okay and stayed with my starting opposite number until Greeba. I threw it in left
then right for the exit of Greeba Castle and the rear tyre came around to meet
the front. The airbag went off in my leathers! I de-throttled and ended up with
the screen under me and heading for the wall, I managed to slow enough to avoid
hitting the wall and to laugh at the marshals running hell for leather towards
me. Took it steady after that and got back up to pace after Glen Helen ended up
69th out of 115 starters.
I raced the Senior which is the main Race on Friday and made the mistake of listening
to the forecast and fitted intermediate wet tyres for the best weather of the
fortnight, I started at No 72 and finished 52nd fastest lap 109.24 so was very
happy and kept it upright. I was clocked at 145mph through the top of St Ninians
traffic lights, which impressed me more than anything. Next race is a 4hr Endurance
race in October, we came 3rd last year out of 36 teams, this year Conor Cummins
who is a top 5 R6 Cup racer is in the team (Looks better on my CV than his) and
Derran (TT Racer) and then it is a full lobotomy and Sidecar TT 2005.
